Primeira adaptação cinematográfica da obra de Gaston Leroux, aqui em versão muda, sobre a clássica história de Erik (Lon Chaney ), compositor desfigurado que se apaixona por uma cantora de ópera e tenta fazer dela a estrela principal da companhia, matando a todos que se opuserem a isso.

The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel of the same title directed by Rupert Julian. The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House,[2] causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere.
The film also features Mary PhilbinNorman KerryArthur Edmund CareweGibson GowlandJohn St. Polis, and Snitz Edwards. The only surviving cast member is Carla Laemmle (born 1909), niece of producerCarl Laemmle, who played a small role as "prima ballerina" in the film when she was about 15.
The film was adapted by Elliott J. Clawson, Frank M. McCormack (uncredited), Tom Reed (titles) and Raymond L. Schrock. It was directed by Rupert Julian, with supplemental direction by Lon ChaneyEdward Sedgwick and Ernst Laemmle (unconfirmed). (Wikipedia)

At the Opera of Paris, a mysterious phantom threatens a famous lyric singer, Carlotta and thus forces her to give up her role (Marguerite in Faust) for unknown Christine Daae. Christine meets this phantom (a masked man) in the catacombs, where he lives. Most prints of this movie are from the 1929 reissue version. This version is from 1925. Phantom of the Opera was remade several times. In 1943, director Arthur Lubin produced a 92 minute color version. Oscar winner for Cinematography and Art Direction. In 1962, Phantom of the Opera was directed by Terence Disher, starring Herbert Lom, Heather Sears. 84 minute British production. In 1989, director Dwight H. Little produced the fourth version of Phantom of the Opera with Robert England and Jill Schoelen. Shot in Budapest, but set in London. The 1999 Italian version of The Phantom of the Opera was directed by Dario Argento.
